该剧基于作家ArturoPérez-Reverte的畅销书《LaReinaDelSur》进而改编的。《南方女王》讲述关于女主TeresaMendoza（AliceBraga饰）的故事，当他的毒贩男盆友在墨西哥意外被谋杀后，女主被迫逃到美国寻求庇护，她与过去的小伙伴一起共同反击杀害他男友并追杀她的贩毒集团头目，然而在这过程中，慢慢的她学会了贩毒行当的“知识”和“谋略”，并渐渐的成为贩毒集团新的老大。PeterGadiot饰演常规角色JamesValdez，是CamilaVargas（VeronicaFalcon饰）手下新崛起的人物，对毒品世界十分了解。尽管他会对反抗他的人施加严厉的惩罚，但Teresa发现他其实很有自己一套正义感，然后他成为Teresa在美国的重要同盟。CarlosGomez饰演一个整季的循环角色JavierAcosta，是个在哥伦比亚能发号施令的毒枭。
